Future Auckland Leaders 2009 - What we've been doing!
January 2009 began with our inaugural 'Project Weekend' designed to help build winning teams and develop project plans for each of the 4 final projects.
The team building workshop, led by Penny Wood, covered tools for skilful team discussion, a team effectiveness model, and designing a winning team. It culminated in a team exercise of kayaking on the Hauraki Gulf. Devonport beckoned but high winds prevented us crossing the busy Louis Vuitton traffic. In depth work was completed by project team members on their project goals, objectives and plans. Sincere thanks to project partners and mentors for their input over the weekend & agreeing to assist the project teams throughout the year.
Rod Oram gave us a riveting economic session - his 4 'I's of Innovation; Invincibility; Inter-dependence & Imbalances were the background to a valuable overview of the current global economic crisis.
The Four Projects for 2009:
-
People Valuing People - An operational model for the integration of social services.
-
Building Stronger Communities
-
Re engaging the Elderly - City Guides
-
Asian Angels
Our project teams will be reporting to the 'project review panel' on a regular basis; project completion is scheduled for end September with presentation of projects to our Members in October.
Future Auckland Leadership Programme
The Orakei Marae hosted our 2008 Future Auckland Leaders for their Welcome Weekend and the start of their 2 year journey of "Getting to know Auckland" and exploring what it will mean to be a leader in Auckland in the future.
A highlight of the programme, the Weekend brought together 28 new leaders from diverse host organisations including large corporate organisations, businesses, local government, educational institutions and the not for profit sectors.
Sessions spanning two 'sleepover' days were filled with talks, panel discussions, presentations and in-depth introductions to Committee for Auckland and our vision of "helping make Auckland one of the world's great places to live and work".
Themes revolved around Auckland's economy, our leadership challenges and opportunities, governance and the latest demographic trends and implications for the region. Grant Hawke and Tiwana Tibble shared Ngati Whatua's history and the work of the Ngati Whatua o Orakei Trust Board with us before alumni and sponsors joined in the hangi. Sir Ron Carter's 'talking head' lecture on 'Leadership and the team' was a highlight enjoyed by all.
The new leaders faired magnificently during their scavenger hunts and 'pitches to future immigrants to our city' and gave thoughtful and in depth commentary on Auckland's challenging leadership opportunities.
Sincere thanks to ASB Bank for their sponsorship of this third intake and to all our Committee for Auckland members for 'loaning' us your new leaders for the next 2 years. We look forward to a stimulating and engaging 'experiential leadership' programme.
